Prospector XL Tray Bed


The Prospector XL Tray Bed concept started out as a personal project of AEV's President, Dave Harriton, which later evolved into one of the most talked about vehicles ever built by AEV. The original Prospector XL Tray Bed concept vehicle was first shown at the 2013 SEMA Show and has since traversed thousands of highway and off-highway miles all over North America. From the arid deserts of southern California to the frozen expanse of the Arctic Ocean, the Prospector XL Tray Bed proved that it was capable of taking on any adventure we threw at it. AEV Special Operations is recreating 10 of these legendary vehicles and giving you the rare opportunity to own a piece of AEV history! Based on the Ram 2500 Regular Cab / Long Bed platform, the Prospector XL Tray Bed shares many of the same components as the original AEV concept vehicle, with the addition of some very unique upgrades, to transform this Prospector XL into a one-of-a-kind off-road adventure vehicle that is up for any challenge.

  • Prospector XL Tray Bed front bumper

    PREMIUM FRONT BUMPER: Made from stamped 4mm steel for the optimal combination of strength and weight-savings. The Premium Front Bumper is engineered to retain OE airflow characteristics for proper engine cooling. A new intercooler shroud is included for diesel applications. Ductile-iron tow loops double as Hi-Lift jack points and wear plates. The bumper includes mounts for an optional Warn 16.5ti winch and of Vision-X LED lighting.

    ALUMINUM TRAY BED: Designed specifically for overland adventure travelers and recreational explorers who require an extremely capable full-size truck that also has the ability to tow heavy loads and carry a substantial amount of gear or even large adventure motorcycles. It is also the ideal platform for customers who wish to build the ultimate overland adventure vehicle by adding a bed mounted camper - the possibilities are endless!

    HIGHMARK FENDER FLARES: Cheap single-wall plastic flares ultimately get brittle and crack. AEV uses ¼-inch-thick rotomolded polyethylene, inspired by kayaks and Mercedes Unimog flares. The Prospector XL HighMark kit includes inner fender liners for a finished look and provides 4.5 inches of additional tire coverage to legally run wider tires on the street.

    HEAT REDUCTION HOOD: Two strategically placed vents reduce underhood temperature significantly, particularly in slow-going off-road situations. AEV uses 23-gauge stamped steel for enduring durability. While it provides aggressive styling, it is also a vital upgrade for heavy towing or traversing challenging terrain off-road at low speeds.

    KATLA WHEELS: Cast from A356/T6 aluminum, the Katla is tested to stringent SAE J2350 standards, and feature a valve stem recess to protect the valve and its Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) from being torn off or damaged in rough terrain. These wheels have a RAM-specific backspacing for the perfect fitment of a 37-inch to a 41-inch tire.

  • AEV DualSport Suspension for Ram Heaby Duty on an AEV Prospector XL Tray Bed Edition

    DUALSPORT SUSPENSION: Using the OE engineering as a baseline, AEV improves off-road articulation while actually outperforming stock Rams in pavement handling tests. Factory springs and control arms are retained but are optimized with 3-inch cast aluminum coil spacers and front brackets that reposition the control arms and axle an inch forward. This improves fenderwell clearance during suspension cycling. To control unsprung weight, AEV co-engineered Bilstein 5160-series remote reservoir shocks with Prospector XL-specific digressive valving. The benefits are less damping at low speeds and increased firmness as speeds rise, improving control. Corrective components include extended swaybar endlinks, bumpstop lowering brackets, and an aluminum front driveshaft spacer. Additionally, the AEV High Steer Kit restores factory geometry with a replacement draglink, track bar, and track bar tower. These components correct roll center height, body roll, bump steer, and roll steer. Stock steering feel is restored by AEV’s heavy-duty Hydraulic Assist Steering Kit.

    LOW CENTER OF GRAVITY: AEV engineered the Prospector XL to ride and handle better than stock – on up to 41-inch tires. The key is keeping the vehicle’s center of gravity as low as possible. The AEV HighMark Fender Flares increase the fender radius for maximum tire clearance with only the AEV 3-inch DualSport suspension lift. The flares also combine with proper-offset AEV wheels to accommodate 13.5-inch-wide tires for a wider, more stable stance with no steering clearance issues.

    RECOVERY READY: Getting stuck in any off-road vehicle is more a question of when than if. With this in mind, AEV engineered the Prospector XL with several recovery-ready features. The Premium Front Bumper is designed for an optional Warn 16.5ti winch. Also, the 30,000-pound-rated ductile iron tow loops are engineered to accept only appropriately rated D-rings. The loops also function as rock wear plates and Hi-Lift jack points.

    AUXILIARY LIGHTING: The Prospector XL upgrades foglights to Vision-X LED units as part of the Premium Front Bumper system. The bumper also accepts an optional Vision-X 20-inch Xmitter Prime LED Light Bar, which has been durability-tested in adverse conditions.

    RAISED AIR INTAKE: The Prospector XL gets the cleanest, coldest air possible – even in dusty and wet conditions – from the AEV Raised Air Intake. AEV offers two designs: standard Air Ram or High-Efficiency, which is self-cleaning and filters out 98% of debris.

    AIR LOCKERS: For on-demand traction, nothing beats the ARB Air Locker. This system allows open-differential on-road operation for optimal steering and reduced tire wear. Engaging the system sends equal torque to both wheels for the ultimate in off-road traction.

    Each AEV Prospector XL is professionally assembled at AEV’s Detroit-area factory. Like all other AEV turnkey vehicles, every Prospector XL receives a door-mounted Build Plaque containing that vehicle’s unique serial number and build date.
