AEV’s Transfer Case Skid Plate is the backbone of the 2019-22 Colorado ZR2 Bison’s lightweight but incredibly strong, Hot Stamped Boron Steel Skid Plate Package. This skid plate can be used as a either a standalone component to protect the transfer case or combined with the ZR2 Bison’s Transmission and Fuel Tank Skid Plates for maximum underbody protection.
This Transfer Case Skid Plate is compatible with 2015-2022 Colorado Z71 and ZR2 (excluding crew cab models w/ 6.5’ bed). This skid plate does not require any additional skid plates for installation. E-coated for maximum corrosion resistance and is proudly made in the USA.
Hot Stamped Boron Steel (HSBS) is an ultra-high strength, press hardened steel and is most commonly used in automotive applications for passenger impact protection because it is lightweight with an extremely high yield strength (approximately 200,000 ksi vs. mild steel at 25,000 ksi). AEV chose this material for the Colorado ZR2 Bison’s skid plate package not just because of its high strength-to-weight ratio but also for its hardness and resistance to gouging.

- How did working with GM on the ZR2 Bison impact the design of your skid plates?
It was actually a great learning experience for us, especially since skid plates are not something that we have really explored in much depth prior to the ZR2 Bison. Seemingly "minor details", such as the hardware, flag nuts, attachment points, etc. are all details that became very important as to not jeopardize the structural integrity of the frame.
We also had to take into account the dynamic movements of the engine, transmission and exhaust to ensure everything works in harmony and follow best practices in terms of drainage (not only dirt and mud but also for service drains).

Yes, the ZR2 Bison was developed and tested on some of the most iconic 4wd trails in the United States where under body protection is a requirement if you want to get home under your own power.
