Product FAQs

Is Hot-Stamped Boron Steel really a thing or is it just a marketing gimmick?

Oh, it’s really a thing! Hot Stamped Boron Steel is an ultra-high strength, press hardened steel. Hot Stamped Boron Steel is most commonly used in automotive applications for passenger impact protection because it is lightweight with an extremely high yield strength. We first started using this material for the original Colorado ZR2 Bison’s OEM skid plate package because of its high strength-to-weight ratio, hardness and resistance to gouging.

I’ve heard horror stories of some aftermarket skid plates blocking off airflow or trapping debris. What makes AEV Skid Plates different?

The difference is in the development, testing and validation that goes into our skid plates. These are not aftermarket skid plates—these are OEM skid plates, developed alongside GM engineers specifically for the ZR2 Bison and AEV Edition programs. We had to follow the same protocols and were subject to all the same testing and validation procedures than any other OEM component would go through.

Why not use aluminum instead of steel to save weight?

Aluminum is lightweight and easy to shape, but it is very soft and not nearly as strong as steel. Hot-Stamped Boron Steel is much stronger than aluminum and far more resistant to gouging. Since it is press-hardened and heat-treated, we are able to deliver a product that is both lighter and stronger than any other previously used OEM or aftermarket skid plate manufacturing methods.

What kind of coating is used on the skid plates?

We use a multi-stage, automotive-grade E-coating process on all our skid plates.

Where are your skid plates manufactured?

AEV Skid Plates for Silverado/Sierra LD are manufactured in Canada.
