AEV Commander (XK) Iceland Expedition Vehicle

AEV, in conjunction with our sponsors, will be retracing a 1980 National Geographic expedition to Iceland. The goal is to re-trace a trip over the Vatnajökull glacier to the headwaters of the Jökulsá River, and then travel by whitewater kayak to the ocean. The headwaters are actually a hot spring located under the glacier which will require the kayakers to rappel down and then kayak out under the glacier! The original expedition used just about every mode of transportation available at the time - our expedition will use AEV prepped Jeeps and whitewater kayaks only. The entire expedition will be filmed by Arris Productions in HD and shown on the VOOM network.

From the Designer:

This Jeep worked better than anyone expected (and we all thought it would work really well). The Commander drives well on the highway (it only has about 4.5" of lift), and does great in the snow that we built it for.

I have driven it in the mountains in over 15 feet of snow without ever having any mechanical issues. The factory differential system works great, as always, and there is room enough for seven. -dh

Design Sponsorship Information

AEV utilizes extremely high-end hardware and software for all of our designs. Both CAD and CAM systems are fully 3D, parametric, and allow for products that compete on an OEM level. Such high-end software requires equally high-end machines. In this case, AEV has chosen to work exclusively with AMD and its line of Opteron series workstation processors.  ATI's FireGL line of graphics cards are in all design machines and provide fast, accurate, and smooth graphics.

Both vehicles for the 2005 SEMA show were designed completely on this new hardware. Previous to upgrades in design hardware it would not have been possible to simultaneously work on two fully functional image vehicles for the same show in the 4 weeks allotted. AEV is committed to using the right tool for the job in all aspects of our vehicles.
